Two weeks before the launch of the Nintendo Switch OLED model, Nintendo is airing a 40-minute Nintendo Direct to showcase games you might want to play on it. Catch all of the news and announcements right here at 6 p.m. EDT/3 p.m. PDT on Thursday, Sept. 23.
We’ve embedded the YouTube broadcast above; Nintendo is also streaming the event on its official website and Twitch channel.
The most recent Nintendo Direct came during E3 2021 in July, so the latest show is ripe for a major announcement or two — especially as the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) arrives Oct. 8, 2021. A new console needs games, too, after all.
We’ve been expecting more about a major Animal Crossing: New Horizons update since that was announced back in July. The June Nintendo Direct didn’t make any mention of a content update, and fans have been antsy enough for new stuff that the company felt it necessary to thank them for their patience. Some 32 million copies of the game were sold as of this summer.
We’re also waiting on news of the 82nd — and last — playable character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Creator Masahiro Sakurai said at the end of June that Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will be the last premium DLC offered for the 2018 game, and it has one slot left to announce.
Rumors for the past few weeks have suggested that Game Boy and Game Boy Color games would be coming to the library of titles available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Nintendo 64 games may also be part of the mix, according to more recent rumors. Nintendo hasn’t said anything officially, of course — so if this is happening, Thursday is a great time to clear things up.
Fans are also hopeful that they’ll hear more about a Xenoblade Chronicles sequel, Bayonetta 3 (first announced at the end of 2017), or possibly the official title for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel announced in June. There’s no confirmation any of those three will actually get a reveal at this show, so you’ll have to tune in to find out like the rest of us.
