It appears that production on the first episode of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series has wrapped up. Director Kantemir Balagov made the announcement on Instagram.
“My job here is done. I’m really grateful for the opportunity. It was a great experience with ups & downs. Much love to the crew and especially to these people,” he said, listing off some his colleagues on the production, including Naughty Dog’s own Neil Druckmann.
The Last of Us received a straight-to-series order, which means HBO is not filming a pilot episode and is instead launching directly into the series.
Balagov directed the season premiere, while celebrated directors Jasmila Zbanic and Ali Abbasi have also been tapped to direct episodes in the first season.
Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal plays Joel in The Last of Us, while Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) is lined up to play Ellie. Diego Luna plays Tommy, and he recently shared what looks like the first set photo from the production.
As for the game series, Naughty Dog might make The Last of Us 3, or potentially a new IP, as its next game. On the more immediate horizon, Naughty Dog is developing a standalone Last of Us multiplayer game. In other news, a recent report said Naughty Dog is also working on a Last of Us remake for PS5.
