The Luther movie starring Idris Elba is officially happening at Netflix, and it’s added two new cast members. Cynthia Erivo, who earned an Academy Award nomination for playing Harriet Tubman, will appear in the movie, alongside The Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis.
Netflix is producing the Luther movie with the BBC, the network that originally hosted the TV show. Fans may be happy to learn that Neil Cross, the creator and writer of the TV show, wrote the script for the Luther movie. Jamie Payne (Outlander) is directing the movie, which begins production in November.

“In the movie’s story, which is the continuation of the Luther saga, Luther will have to contend with a double threat. Erivo is playing a detective who is also Luther’s nemesis while Serkis is the story’s criminal villain,” The Hollywood Reporter said of the film.
The announcement of the Luther movie comes after years of rumor and speculation. In 2020, Elba said, “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther.” The Luther TV show, however, is likely finished.
