Innersloth has revealed a terrifying new trick that Impostors will have up their sleeve in the next Among Us update. The Shapeshifter is a new role that Impostors can have; the rest of the new Among Us roles will all be for the Crewmate side. And with a Shapeshifter joining the ranks, Crewmates will definitely have their hands full.
The Shapeshifter can well, shapeshift, by pulling up a menu of all living Crewmates in the game. The Shapeshifter can assume their appearance, including their color, cosmetics, and name. This only lasts for a brief period of time, and it takes a moment to shapeshift, so you have to play things carefully or everyone will see you trying to wear a buddy’s face. Shapeshifting also leaves evidence behind, so keen-eyed detectives can spot the deception taking place.

This is, of course, a spectacular way to gaslight your friends and sow chaos in a lobby. You can frame Crewmates, disguise yourself after committing a hideous crime, and otherwise confuse the good guys before they can root the Impostors out. Crewmates are going to want to keep an eye on their friends, and think very carefully about whether the bean they’re approaching is a trusted ally or deadly chameleon.
Players will be able to update their custom options to adjust many things about the Shapeshifter. Innersloth shared additional details in the developer’s blog:
Probability: In the game lobby settings, you’ll be able to change the number and chance of an Impostor to have the Shapeshift ability. You can turn off the chance of having the Shapeshift role completely.
e.g. 2 Shapeshifters, with a 30% chance of a Shapeshifter role appearing
Shapeshift Duration: How long an Impostor stays shifted after they change.
Leave Shapeshifting Evidence: Whether or not there is physical evidence of a shapeshift being left in a room after the Impostor morphs.
Developers at Innersloth are planning an upcoming event where they will share more about the current state of Among Us and the next update, which does not yet have a release date. We’ll likely get a look at the new roles for Crewmates, which will help them battle off those sneaky Impostors.
