Randall Park, who appeared in WandaVision earlier this year, is set to star in the Netflix comedy series Blockbuster. As reported by Deadline, the show will be set in the last remaining Blockbuster video rental store.
Blockbuster will be a 10-episode series and is created by Vanessa Ramos, who previously worked on shows such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Superstore. Deadline notes that the producers have acquired the rights to use the Blockbuster name, branding, and uniforms in the series.
Park is best known for playing FBI agent Jimmy Woo in the recent Disney+ MCU show WandaVision and the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp. He also appeared in Aquaman as Dr. Stephen Shin and in all six seasons of the hit comedy Fresh Off The Boat.
It’s ironic that Netflix is producing a show about the once-massive video rental chain. When Netflix launched as a postal rental service in 1997, it was in direct competition with Blockbuster. In 2000, Netflix founders Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph even met with the video giant in an attempt to sell their company to it, but they were turned down. Of course, the rest is home entertainment history–Netflix is one of the biggest entertainment companies and movie studios in the world, while Blockbuster finally closed for good in 2014. In real life, the last Blockbuster store was in Bend, Oregon.
In a statement, Netlflix head of comedy Tracey Pakosta said, “When Vanessa and [producer] David [Caspe] first came in and shared this idea for a comedy series, we were immediately excited. This is ultimately the story of a dedicated group of co-workers, with a lot of heart. And now with the hilarious Randall Park signing on to play the lead, it’s a no-brainer.”
