Squid Game has been one of Netflix’s most popular shows in recent years, so there is a lot of excitement and anticipation for the second season. But when is it coming? We still don’t know, but series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that the sophomore season could arrive by the end of 2023 or 2024.

Hwang is said to be in the midst of “final discussions” with Netflix for Season 2. So far, Hwang only has about three pages’ worth of ideas that could be turned into a script, so it’s still early days. But Hwang assures that the games are going to return and that “humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again. I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?'”

Main character Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is returning, but there is no word on the rest of the cast for Season 2.

Season 1 ended in a dramatic fashion, and while the show doesn’t necessarily need a second season, it was such a massive hit that it’s no surprise to learn the show is coming back. In January this year, Netflix management confirmed that Squid Game would “absolutely” return for Season 2.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said Season 2 of Squid Game will be part of the company’s plans for a “Squid Game universe,” which suggests there could be spin-offs, too.

Hwang previously told Variety that he came up with the idea for Squid Game in 2008 when it was conceived as a film. However, Korean movie studios refused to finance it due to its violent themes.
