Frost Giant Studios, an independent developer formed from Blizzard veterans, unveiled the title and look of its original real-time strategy game, Stormgate. A cinematic trailer shown during the Summer Game Fest Live showcase combined futuristic sci-fi and fantasy elements. You can now sign up for a beta set to begin in 2023.

Stormgate is built in Unreal Engine 5 and will be free-to-play. Frost Giant promises a full story campaign, in-client esports tools like 1v1 ranked matches and team-based 3v3 with unique win conditions, spectating tools, and an in-game editor. It’s also aiming to be a more inviting RTS, with tools built to streamline the gameplay for newcomers as they become familiar with the genre. Frost Giant was founded in 2020 by Tim Morten and Tim Campbell, whose credits include Warcraft 3 and StarCraft 2. The studio had previously announced it was working on a new RTS franchise using UE5.

The story of Stormgate revolves around a post-apocalyptic Earth hundreds of years in the future, following a calamitous war caused by the Infernals. The alien race, which appears demonic, emerged from dormant Stormgates during powerful solar storms. The human race fought back, but the conflict left the world decimated.

In an interview with host Geoff Keighley, the studio promised multiple factions on top of the two we’ve seen, co-op campaign, and 3v3 competitive multiplayer–and no NFTs.

“We are building Stormgate for the real-time strategy community–past, present, and future,” said CEO Tim Morten in the announcement. “Our vision is to create a social experience that breaks down the barriers that have kept people away, to welcome back players who have been waiting for the next great RTS, and to prove that the RTS genre can thrive once again.”

Frost Giant promises more details to come at the PC Gaming Show, to take place on Sunday, June 12 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET. For more, check out our complete Not-E3 event schedule to see when all of the summer showcases are taking place.
