Nintendo blessed us with several great game announcements during today’s Nintendo E3 Direct, but none were bigger or more anticipated than the new look at The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 for the Nintendo Switch!
The game was first announced all the way back in E3 2019. As series Producer, Eiji Aonuma stated in the Direct today, “Two years have passed since we first announced this game, and we have been unable to share anything with you in that time. However, development has been steadily progressing. For today, we prepared some new footage to show a bit more of the game.”
So here it is! Finally, after two whole years, a new look at The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2!
Similar to the previous announcement trailer, this 90-second preview starts off with some dark and ominous imagery. But it continues with an exciting revelation – part of BOTW 2 will be taking place in the skies above Hyrule!
Is it merely a coincidence that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, a previous Legend of Zelda game set partly in the sky, is releasing this year on July 16, 2021 ahead of Breath of the Wild 2? Or is there a connection between the two games that Nintendo wants us to learn? If there is, that will be quite the surprise!
Gameplay footage briefly shows off some of Link’s new abilities. One new ability allows him to pass his body through solid ground!
As for clothing, Link is spotted wearing a new outfit different from his traditional green tunic. The ability to change outfits was popularized in the first BOTW and it seems that feature will be present for the sequel.
While a solid release date wasn’t announced for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, Aonuma did end the announcement by saying, “We’re aiming for a 2022 release, so I hope you look forward to it!”
Thanks for the update, Aonuma-san and Nintendo. Another great gaming experience to look forward to in 2022!
Note: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is most likely a placeholder title. As of the time of this writing, Nintendo has not yet released the official title of the sequel.
