A new book based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire is in the works to tie into the upcoming HBO spin-off House of the Dragon, which premieres later this year.

The book is called The Rise of the Dragon, and it’s an illustrated history of the Targaryen family, who will be the focus of the new show. The book comes from Random House’s Ten Speed Press.

The Rise of the Dragon has more than 180 new illustrations focusing on the famous dragon family. “The Rise of the Dragon chronicles the creation and rise of Targaryen power in Westeros, covering the history first told in George R. R. Martin’s epic Fire & Blood, from Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros through to the infamous Dance of the Dragons–the bloody civil war that nearly undid Targaryen rule for good,” reads a line from the book’s official description.

The Rise of the Dragon hits store shelves on October 25 from authors Martin, Elio M. Garcia Jr., and Linda Antonsson. It’s described as being Volume One, which suggests more installments may follow.

HBO has not yet announced a release date for House of the Dragon, but the book’s release date might offer a clue as to when the show could premiere.

Set hundreds of years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows the drama involving the House Targaryen. “As King Viserys (Paddy Considine) reaches the end of his reign, a brutal battle for succession kicks off between his beloved daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and his second wife Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), who wants the throne for her sons,” reads a line from the show’s description. Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and Harry Potter actor Rhys Ifans also star in the series.

In February, Martin himself revealed that all 10 episodes in Season 1 have now finished filming, and the author said he’s seen rough cuts of them and he’s “loving” what he’s seen so far.
