Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio will finally be arriving at the end of this year in December. Netflix revealed the first teaser for the stop-motion musical featuring Jiminy Cricket. Sure, it’s a brief video that doesn’t give too much insight into how this will differ from other adaptations of the beloved story, but it sure is beautiful.

Mark Gustafson (animation director on Fantastic Mr. Fox) and del Toro co-direct the upcoming movie, which features Ewan McGregor (Birds of Prey) as Cricket, David Bradley (The World’s End) as Geppetto, and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Check out the video below.

Pinocchio will also have a solid supporting cast: Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton.

Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “Guillermo del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion musical directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.”

News of the adaptation first arrived back in 2018. This has been a project del Toro has wanted to work on for quite some time, to bring his aesthetic take to this beloved story, as he revealed when the project was announced. “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

As for what else del Toro may or may not be working on, he seemingly teased a new Silent Hill at last year’s Game Awards. He said he loves the art direction in Silent Hill and hopes we get a new game soon, then playfully shrugged his shoulders. He later was questioned about this statement and told the Happy Sad Confused Podcast that he’s not working on one.
