Season 4 of Cobra Kai, the popular series continuing The Karate Kid film saga, just dropped on Netflix on December 31–and if you’ve made it to the final episode, chances are you’re wondering about how that surprise celebrity cameo came to be.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Season 4 of Cobra Kai. If you haven’t watched and don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading.

Grammy-winning singer Carrie Underwood appears in Episode 9 of Season 4, singing Survivor’s “The Moment of Truth” at the All Valley Karate Tournament. Why is a globally popular singer performing at a local karate contest? Who knows, to be honest. What we do know is how Underwood wound up being cast on the series.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cobra Kai co-creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg revealed that the creative team behind the series took notice of a tweet Underwood made in August 2020 when she began binging the series. Underwood’s tweet, short and to the point, called the series “kinda awesome.”

Heald said it took them “about five minutes” to approach Underwood to discuss a possible guest appearance. “Be careful what you tweet about Cobra Kai if you’re a celebrity,” adds Schlossberg, “because we immediately log it and think about the possibilities.”

For the cliffhanger, you should check out our interview with showrunners Heald and Hurwitz. If you’re wary of spoilers, hold off on clicking through–but know that their quotes help tee up the questions they’re excited to explore in Season 5, and not give away any answers.
