In 2015, Netflix debuted the March series Daredevil. In the next few years, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and other shows were introduced, all a part of the greater MCU. However, beginning on March 1, all of these Marvel/Netflix collaborations will be removed from the service. It has been confirmed that the Netflix license for all the series mentioned above has ended and rights have reverted to Disney.
When playing one of these shows, the intros for Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and Defenders all have a message indicating they’re leaving the streaming service next month. What’s bizarre about this is the way Netflix is revealing it to subscribers, which was first reported by What’s On Netflix and corroborated by GameSpot. When starting to view any of these shows on certain profiles, the departure date is displayed in the top-left corner. However, it doesn’t appear on the shows’ respective pages, nor is the top-left message present for some viewers.
The partnership between Marvel and Netflix lasted from 2015-2019, with numerous seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Punisher being released. By 2019, every Netflix/Marvel collaboration had been canceled, with Jessica Jones Season 3 being the last release of June that year.
A few months after the cancellation of these shows, Disney–Marvel’s parent company–launched its own streaming service, Disney+. While nothing has been confirmed yet, it’s possible all these shows could move to Disney+, or they’re placed in the Disney Vault for decades because they are Netflix productions.
Disney has already utilized two things from Netflix’s TV shows. Vincent D’Onofrio reprised his role as Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin, in the Hawkeye limited series last year. Additionally, in December, Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Maybe Disney is trying to bring the Netflix Marvel Universe over to its own.
