The One Piece live-action show was officially announced by Netflix in January 2020, following several years of rumors about a potential adaptation. Owens and Maeda are the showrunners, and the first season will have 10 episodes. We still have no details about casting, directors, or a release date, but it’s exciting to think it’s finally happening.
One Piece focuses Luffy, a young man who idolizes the pirate Shanks. Luffy and his Straw Hats pirate crew set sail to find the legendary One Piece treasure, so he can become King of the Pirates. The manga and anime series follows his adventures as he sails around the world, meeting interesting people, corrupt governments, bounty hunters, and more. The manga was created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997 and is the best-selling manga series ever released. The anime version premiered in 1999 and has so far had 20 seasons, as well as 14 theatrical movies.
One Piece isn’t the only much-loved anime getting a live-action version from Netflix. The adaptation of the classic sci-fi adventure Cowboy Bebop releases on November 19–we’re yet to see a trailer, but the first Cowboy Bebop images were recently revealed.
