The June 2022 PlayStation State of Play kicked off with a banger, revealing a remake of Resident Evil 4 is coming to PS5 on March 24, 2023. While the stream focused on PS5, the game is also coming to other platforms, including Xbox Series X|S and PC. The reveal was immediately followed by more Resident Evil news, as Resident Evil Village for PSVR2 was announced.

The Resident Evil 4 remake announcement was accompanied by a trailer for the game, showcasing how the 2004 action horror game has been updated aesthetically. Unfortunately, we don’t get much idea as to how it’s been changed mechanically. The trailer is embedded below.

In a PlayStation Blog, Capcom promotion producer Edvin Edsö said, “[Resident Evil 4 Remake] is being developed to achieve state-of-the-art quality for a survival horror suitable for 2023, while preserving the essence of the original game. We aim to make the game feel familiar to fans of the series, while also providing a fresh feeling to it. This is being done by reimagining the storyline of the game while keeping the essence of its direction, modernizing the graphics, and updating the controls to a modern standard.”

The blog post goes on to describe the set-up for RE4 Remake, which follows all the same beats of the original RE4, so it’s not immediately clear what about the game is changing in this remake. The trailer does seem to hint at a spookier vibe, so perhaps RE4 Remake will be a more survival horror take on the more action-y horror RE4. But we’ll have to wait and see as to whether that’s the case.
