If you’re planning on replaying Resident Evil 7 or the remakes of Resident Evil 2 or 3 on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, you’ll be able to do so without losing save data. In addition to being free upgrades, the new-gen versions also support existing save data, assuming you don’t want to start the entire journey from scratch.

Capcom shared the news on Twitter today via the official Resident Evil account, saying both the PS4 and Xbox One versions care saves over to “their respective upgraded versions.” This means you’ll have to stay in the same console family to move the saves, unlike certain other new-gen upgrades like Grand Theft Auto V.

The three games will be getting “visual enhancements” on the new systems, though it’s unclear exactly what form those will take. If you’re on PC, an update released alongside those versions will bring the games visually in line with the Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

Resident Evil Village, already a cross-gen release, should give you a rough idea of what to expect. The game features Smart Delivery on Xbox consoles and both PS4 and PS5 versions are included via the PlayStation Store, with the option to install either on PS5.

Capcom hasn’t always taken this approach, as the Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition games for the newer systems were separate products without any discount or transferring. But as new consoles continue to be difficult to find, it will be nice for players who are halfway through one of these Resident Evil games to pick up right where they left off if they do track one down.
