The first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel premiered tonight during The Game Awards, with stars Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz introducing fans to the new video.

As mentioned, Ben Schwartz returns to voice Sonic again, while James Marsden and Tika Sumpter will come back as Tom and Maddie. Jim Carrey is set to return as well as Dr. Robotnik. Idris Elba will play Knuckles, while Colleen O’Shaughnessey–who voices Tails in the Sonic games–reprises the role of Tails in the film. The movie opens on April 8, and the official description can be seen below (via Collider).

“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”

Sonic the movie was released in February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. It made more than $319 million worldwide at the box office.
