Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is one of the most-anticipated Warhammer games in development, and it received a new behind-the-scenes video as part of the Warhammer Skulls stream on June 1. The video shows a development team focused on accuracy within the Warhammer 40,000 canon and topping the underappreciated original game.

“We didn’t want to create just any third-person shooter. We wanted to create a game that embodied the galactic warfare that you’ve come to know from this franchise,” said creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick in the video. “It is a passion piece for all of the people working at Saber. These are people who have read the novels through the years–who have played the games–and so nobody has higher expectations than us.”

Hollis-Leick mentions that most humans in the Warhammer 40,000 universe will actually never see a Space Marine–something we might not think about considering how many are involved in the various video games. They’re the stuff of legend, and that ruthless efficiency and brutality needed to be reflected in Space Marine 2. That meant also pulling from the Warhammer 40,000 books for information on how Space Marines fight.

Quick gameplay glimpses (some of which were also in the game’s reveal trailer) show protagonist Titus leaping and slamming down into a group of enemies, sending them all flying back and shattering the ground under his feet. Like the previous game, Space Marine 2 features a mix of hack-and-slash combat and third-person shooting, showing off the full breadth of Titus’ skills that should appeal to both sets of “GoW” fans: God of War and Gears of War.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 doesn’t yet have a release date, but the game is planned to launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
