Three years ago, filmmaker Morgan Cooper made a short fan trailer for a contemporary look at Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The trailer caught Will Smith’s attention who announced he was going to take that concept and actually go through with a remake. Now finally, we have our first official look at Peacock’s Bel-Air, hitting the streaming service on February 13.
“Three years ago, my guy Morgan Cooper uploaded his fan trailer to YouTube, showing how he envisioned the Fresh Prince as a drama,” Smith said on the announcement. “Now, here is the first full look at his retelling of the story that’s always been so close to my heart.”
There are a lot of similarities from Carlton’s group of friends, to how Will dresses at school, but the drama has been exponentially expanded. The whole part of the “got in one little fight and my mom got scared” part of the story has been escalated and now it’s part of why Will is there: he’s in hiding. Uncle Phil makes sure that reason is hidden and explains that he’s there for a better education.
The trailer also hints at the initial clash that Will and Phil get into and maybe even a clue to the ending of the first episode, which has Will playing the piano with Phil secretly looking on.
The cast includes newcomer Jabari Banks as Will, Adrian Holmes (The Boys) as Uncle Phil, Cassandra Freeman (Luke Cage) as Aunt Viv, Olly Sholotan as Carlton, Coco Jones (Vampires vs The Bronx) as Hilary, Jimmy Akingbola (Arrow) as Geoffrey, Akira Akbar (Captain Marvel) as Ashely, and Jordan L. Jones as Jazz.
The original Fresh Prince of Bel-Air aired originally on NBC from 1990-1996, making Will Smith a household name. Bel-Air has already been renewed for a second season.
