District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is adapting Sony’s Gran Turismo racing series for a movie, according to Deadline. It was previously reported that Gran Turismo would be getting a TV series, but Deadline said this is not true and that PlayStation Productions is making a movie instead.

There are no other details available about the reported Gran Turismo movie. As part of a Q&A during Sony’s latest business briefing, PlayStation’s Jim Ryan also confirmed that a TV show based on the Horizon series is coming to Netflix, while a God of War show is headed to Amazon Prime.

Blomkamp is no stranger to video game movies, as he was working with The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson on a Halo film years ago before it all fell apart. He and Jackson went on to make District 9 after Halo crumbled, and the movie became a cult success. Blomkamp later directed Elysium with Matt Damon. In addition to his ongoing work in the film space, Blomkamp is working with developer Gunzilla on a battle royale game called Off The Grid for release in 2023.

PlayStation Productions, founded in 2019, is the business unit of Sony responsible for bringing PlayStation’s video game franchises to TV and film. The Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg debuted this year and broke box office records. Other projects in the works include a Last of Us TV series at HBO and a Twisted Metal show for Peacock.

As for Blomkamp, he recently commented on the movie landscape these days, saying there is a “complete saturation” of known IP dominating the box office that is threatening the existence of lower-budget productions. Hollywood’s attraction to big-budget films from known franchise could “strangle out” new ideas, the director said.
