In a new interview, actor Will Poulter (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Dopesick) has shared some details about his role as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Speaking with The Independent, Poulter talked about the requisite training regimen to become–as Marvel describes the character–“genetically engineered by scientists to be the perfect being.”

“It’s difficult talking about it because with Marvel it’s all secret squirrel,” said Poulter, but explained that transforming his mental and physical health for the role was Marvel’s main priority–and that that metamorphosis is “unhealthy and unrealistic if you don’t have the financial backing of a studio paying for your meals and training. I’m in a very privileged position in that respect, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did to get ready for that job.”

Poulter added that he is now in a “maintenance phase” and is “not eating copious amounts of food to bulk, and I’m not cutting. I’m just maintaining my weight.” Poulter adds that the last time he drank was New Year’s Eve, and that the “whole social side of my life has to take a back seat.”

In other words, Poulter should be positively shredded in the film. Meanwhile, on the other side of the “physical transformation for a role” spectrum, last year the internet was split on Thor’s appearance in a trailer for the God of War: Ragnarok video game–people were upset that the hammer-wielding god associated with lightning was “fat.” British powerlifting champion Darren McCormac was quick to swoop in and add that “the peak of male performance” means having “a power belly” with “a layer of lard over it.”

This is information that Poulter maybe could have passed along to Marvel.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 began production back in November 2021 and is slated for a May 2023 release date.
