In a recent interview, actor Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, John Wick) said “it would be an honor” to be cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking with Esquire, Reeves responded to persistent speculation and rumors that such a still-hypothetical role would be welcome–and noticeably demonstrated an intimate knowledge of the MCU.

“Isn’t it bigger than a universe?” said Reeves. “It’s almost like a multiverse… It’s a Marvel-verse… There’s some really amazing directors, and visionaries, and they’re doing something no one’s ever really done. It’s special in that sense in terms of the scale, the ambition, the production. So it’d be cool to be a part of that.”

Since as early as 2019, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said he has been looking for “the right way” to include Reeves in the MCU, saying they literally consider him for “every movie the company makes.” It’s always been discussed as a matter of when, not if–which now opens the door to to figuring out who he might play in an upcoming Phase 5 project.

Striking a different tone, later in the same interview, Reeves said he’s not so keen on his characters John Wick or Neo from The Matrix being in the Mortal Kombat fighting game universe. It’s unclear if the lukewarm reception to the troubled 2020 video game Cyberpunk 2077–in which he appears as Johnny Silverhand–may have cooled his enthusiasm for again lending his image to a game.

Reeves will next appear in the highly-anticipated The Matrix Resurrections, which hits theaters and HBO Max on December 22nd. A new poster promoting the film was recently released.
