A sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat film is officially beginning to take shape, according to Deadline, which reports that studio New Line Cinema has hired Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) to write the upcoming movie’s script.
Greg Russo, who penned the original, said back in April 2021 shortly after Mortal Kombat came out that a sequel’s focus would be obvious since his movie necessarily left out entire realms due only to limited run time. In an interview around release, Russo said, “One of the realms that I felt like it didn’t make sense to introduce in this story because we were so focused on Earthrealm and Outworld, was Edenia, which is another big realm in the Mortal Kombat universe.”
Added Russo, “My favorite character, Kitana, is a princess in Edenia and it just didn’t feel right to bring her in… There [are] other characters too that people love there, like Sindel and Jade and all those characters. So that’s a whole realm that I think is worth exploring, and I have some really cool ideas of what I would do with storylines there.”
So far, the only certain news about the sequel is that Slater is in to write. No word has come out yet about directors, casting, or production start dates. In GameSpot’s review of the 2021 movie reviving the franchise, Chris E. Hayner called Mortal Kombat both “refreshing” in its eagerness to adapt the game series’ brutal fighting and “wonderfully captur[ing] the essence of the Mortal Kombat video game franchise.”
