Microsoft’s swashbuckling pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves continues to grow. As part of Microsoft’s 20th anniversary announcements today, the company revealed that Rare’s game has now reached 25 million players. This isn’t necessarily copies sold, as the game is on Game Pass, but it is indicative of just how massive and enduringly popular the game continues to be.

Sea of Thieves surpassed 20 million players in March, so the game continues to show healthy growth. Rare has said 2021 was shaping up to be Sea of Thieves’ biggest year ever since the game launched in 2018.

Sea of Thieves has indeed had a busy 2021. The game’s Pirates of the Caribbean crossover DLC launched in June, featuring Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and other popular characters and locations from Disney’s film series. The game’s fourth season arrived in September and took players deep underwater for a set of new adventures.

Sea of Thieves is one of GameSpot’s best Xbox One games of all time, and you can see the rest in our roundup of the Xbox One’s 25 best games.
