The Last of Us remake is officially happening. Following a leak earlier in the day, Summer Game Fest Live brought confirmation that The Last of Us Part 1 is being remade for both PS5 and PC. The reveal came after a PlayStation Store listing of the game was discovered early, complete with an accompanying trailer. As the rumor suggested, the game is scheduled to release on September 2 for PS5 (and PC later).

The game has been “built from the ground up for PlayStation 5,” and it will also feature updated and improved AI and 60fps support, among other improvements. It was also revealed that, in addition to a PlayStation 5 release, The Last of Us is also coming to PC, though the release date was not included in the trailer. However, developers said it will come to PC “shortly” after the PS5 release. The Left Behind DLC is included with The Last of Us remake, but not multiplayer–Naughty Dog is at work on a standalone Last of Us multiplayer game, it confirmed.

“We’ve implemented modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options in this single-player experience to allow even more individuals to enjoy the game,” Naughty Dog said in a blog post. “Effects, exploration, and combat have all been enhanced. Leveraging the PS5’s powerful hardware, we also implemented 3D Audio, haptics, and adaptive triggers. Both returning fans and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience both The Last of Us Part I and its prequel story Left Behind in a whole new way.”

This continues PlayStation’s ongoing trend of releasing some of its biggest exclusive titles on PC, allowing a wider audience to experience its narrative-rich titles.

The Firefly edition has even more content

Set in a post-apocalyptic America, The Last of Us follows a man named Joel and his hot-headed, daughter-like companion Ellie as they traverse the country in search of a cure to the fungal outbreak devastating the world. The game was met with critical praise when it released back in 2013, with GameSpot’s The Last of Us review calling it, “a singular adventure that looks the downfall of humanity in the eyes and doesn’t blink.”

Sony released a Last of Us Remastered version of the game in 2014. Some of Naughty Dog’s other upcoming projects include the aforementioned Last of Us multiplayer game and something new from director Neil Druckmann.
